She squinted through the harsh light that shone down on her, the surrounding black leafless tree doing nothing to shield her from the sun. She rolled to her side, three-year old ash mixed with dirt sifting under her with the movement. A quick survey around her revealed that little to no green grew in this charred spot of the dead forest. As she moved to her paws, her white leg fur staining dark gray with the dirty ground she had laid in, she noticed a cave directly to her side. She lowered her head just a bit to peak inside, but it was too dark to see much detail. A quick sniff and angling of her ears told her no living thing was inside.

(I've been wondering, would the pack's skeletons still be there or did Zarrock bring them back using their remains?)
..... No ...... that's impossible .... it's been so long .....

Somewhere on the wind, the faintest whispering could be heard of confusion. In no place particular, and everywhere at once, someone unseen observed the younger wolf. Stunned, in denial, and with flickers of apprehension... it watched.
The young she-wolf's ears flicked at the faint voice, lifting her head to see what it was. Looking over the empty camp, she saw no one. But she felt as if she were not alone. She stood in place for a moment, as if waiting to see if anything would happen. Then, when nothing did, she turned her back on the cave and slowly began to trod through the area. Her eyes flicking to the side, she noticed something that fit in with the scenery, but still looked unusual. Changing direction, she stopped in front of and silently stared down at what she recognized to be the burned remains of a grown wolf.
The whispering came again, this time just as faint but more recognizable as words. The familiar voice of a young grey wolf came again on the wind. "... you're alive .... "
The she-wolf's ears pricked at the voice, followed by the raising of her head. She surveyed the area around her, yet still saw no one.

"...Yes," she agreed after several heartbeats, "Yes...I am."

"...And you?..."

The voice was quiet, and did not reply. His presence started to fade as he was faced with the question. The unease that Rose had been feeling would begin to wane with each moment.

"...Well fudge..."

Already, the she-wolf could feel his presence fading. Her crimson eyes widened and she felt a spark of panic in her chest. He couldn't go yet, she still needed to get her bearings. And he was the best start she had. And so she reached for him.
Physically, she stood in one place, not moving a muscle. But deep within her, as if acting with her very soul, she sweeped the immediate area for this unseen being. He was everywhere at once, not manifested in a specific point in space yet. But still, she tried to hold on to what she could, willing him to stay for just a little longer.

"Who are you?" she asked in a calm voice, "What are you to me?"

For only a fraction of a moment, the entity manifested in Rose's mind-eye as a quick image of himself. In the quick flash, his eyes were full of tears, his face full of pain but no wounds in sight. In the same instant he appeared, he was gone, only a thought once more.

"Pike..." she breathed as tears sprung into her eyes, her heart aching as memories rushed through her head, "Oh, Pike... I'm so sorry..."

She closed her eyes and let out a breath and closed her eyes, taking a moment to center herself.

"This body is Rose's body. But I... I am not her. But I have been with her all her life. You know of me. You, Pike, Rose's very best friend. She told you about me, the being intertwined with her soul. I am not Rose, but you still know who I am. My name is..."

At the sound of her name, Lupa smiled and dipped her head in confirmation.

"I sense you do not have much time, so I will summarize. Rose does know...did know what happened here. She saw everything, but she was powerless to intervene. She is still here, but due to certain circumstances, she...we switched places. It's more complicated than that, but for the time being, picture this. She is the slumbering Guide and I am but a mere she-wolf housing that Guide. But this will not be permanent. If you can return to me, I promise I will explain the situation in more detail."

"... I am strongest at night. Come back then, and don't stray too far."

Pike accepted the information, and vanished. The presence was gone, the eerie feeling on the wind quickly fading as well. Now the camp was nothing more than an empty graveyard again.

"...Very well," Lupa agreed with a dip of her head. She stood in place for a moment, mulling over what had just happened. Then she jolted as the stomach of the body she now controlled rumbled.
"Hunger?" she questioned, placing a white paw over her stomach and looking down in surprise, "...I haven't experienced that in a long...long time..."
After another moment, she smiled to herself.
"A wolf's gotta hunt when a wolf's gotta hunt. ...But I promise, I won't stray too far."

The camp was completely void of life with the she-wolf's departure.

Far north of the Queen's City, a small flock of birds of prey approached a circle of destroyed tree in the midst of a forest. From the head of the formation, Rinka looked to the center of the explosion, the horribly splintered home of her friend, with a grim expression on her face. Silently, the female Peregrine led her followers to hover above the destruction.

"Split up and scour the area for objects of interest. This includes anything that would not naturally be a part of this forest, such as items he might've had in his hollow, or..."

His body...

"Anything that could inform us of his whereabouts, I want to see it for myself. Bring it to me if you can. And if you can't, bring me to it. Also, stay in partnerships. Do not go anywhere if you cannot see or be seen by your partner. I will be here. Thallus, with me."

As her birds departed to carry out her orders, Rinka turned and swooped to a landing on the open space of the tree that used to be Kale's hollow. Once there, she began to examine what remained around her.

The kite landed on a splinter of the destroyed hollow behind the falcon queen.

What happened here...

Thallus took a deep breath and sighed. "It doesn't smell like dragon fire... perhaps the falcon managed to escape."

(Yay! He's out of cryo now! XD)

Rinka nodded with her guard's assessment, having realized the same thing.
"I...I really hope he did," she murmured quietly. After a moment, she approached what used to be a wall of the hollow.
"There was an explosion that was powerful enough to knock Agathar back," she recited what she had been told, louder this time, "It blew this place apart. It even ripped some of the surrounding trees from the ground. But I'm not seeing any scorch marks. I don't think fire was involved..."
As she paused in thought, she scooped up a pile of ash and let it sift through her talons back to the splinters below.

The kite fluttered down from his perch and started shifting through ash, trying to see if he could find anything of use.

I'm a soldier not a detective...

The kite abandoned his digging in the ash and as he was walking over to Rinka to explain this was more than likely pointless--he let out a sharp cry of pain that quickly melted away into a stoic look. The kite picked up his talon and sticking out of it was a small golden splinter, blood starting to trickle out of the stab and onto the floor. "Huh... Your majesty! I may have found something!"

Rinka was not finding much either, but still she tried to find something. Even despite her lack of hope, she still tried to find anything that would show where Kale was, or even if he survived.

And what exactly would have survived an explosion to tell me that, she thought, not for the first time.

The Queen was standing in front of what used to be his desk, sifting through ash and tattered pieces of parchment halfheartedly. It was obvious that even though she was trying, she did not expect to find much. So she was in for a real surprise when she heard Thallus' cry of pain.
She whirled around with wide eyes to see the kite looking at his raised talon. From what she could see, he had no major injuries.
"Are you okay? What happened?" she asked as she walked over to meet him. Then, when she was close enough to look, she stared down in confusion at the golden splinter.

What...

"...May I?" she asked, her own talon hovering to his, ready to pull out the splinter for him if he granted her permission.

(In Kale's hollow's remains there is only one book left that wasn't burned by the explosion and would be sitting at the edge of the treeline, half buried by debris, in the direction Kale left. It's a collection of short stories written by some owl, and looks innocent, but the bookmarked page is a story about a Panda's escape from a bamboo prison. Wink It was totally not left propped against the window where Kale calculated it would remain intact and slide exactly where it did, and totally not left behind as a sign to any allies that would come looking for him. It was also totally not a gift from Rinka for Kale's last hatchday, which would definitely not remind Rinka that she missed this years. Do with this information what you will... XD)

(Ah yes. The book's survival was totally not on purpose, I see. Kale is totally not that bad-A when it comes to stuff like that. And Rinka would totally not feel guilty about forgetting this year's hatchday, since she totally did not get him that specific book that just so happened to survive and coincidentally land in the direction he left. Totally would never happen... XD)
